How to talk to a boyfriend or girlfriend about Delaying sex and Pergnancy
Persuasion Skills
How to talk to a boyfriend or girlfriend about abstinence, condom use, and other prevention methods.
1. Choose the right time:
It can be difficult to talk about abstinence or make decisions when you are in a romantic situation or expressing affection.
It is better to talk in a relaxed setting, such as during a walk or while having a meal.
Choosing the right moment helps the conversation go more smoothly.
2. Speak clearly and directly:
Say what you mean in a simple and honest way. For example, you can say:
- “I do not want to have sexual intercourse because I am not ready.”
- “I do not want to risk sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy.”
- “I only want to have sex if we use protection.”
Speak calmly and with confidence and try to remain respectful and friendly.
If your partner does not accept your decision or pressures you, repeat your message and explain your reasons. For example:
- “I want to focus on my education, and sex could distract me from my goals.”
- “I want to wait until our relationship is stronger and the right time comes.”
- “My religion does not allow sex outside marriage because it is considered wrong.”
If your partner still does not listen, repeat your position firmly. You may also say:
- “It seems you are not listening to me and only focusing on your own wishes. I am sorry, but I do not want to continue this relationship from today.”
3. Be confident:
Once you have made a correct decision, stand by it without feeling guilty. Remember, this helps avoid conflict and misunderstanding. Being confident does not mean being rude or harsh.
4. Stand firm in your decision:
Stay consistent with your choice until the end. In relationships, sexual pressure may come up repeatedly, so you need to be careful and prepared. Even if your partner pressures you or you feel tempted, if your decision is to avoid sex, you should remain firm.
If you decide to have sexual intercourse, you should always use a condom for protection.
