Who needs more iron?

  • Adolescents need more iron because their bodies are growing fast.
  • Girls especially need extra iron to replace iron lost during menstruation.

Who needs more iron?

  • Eat iron-rich foods regularly
  • Take iron and folate supplements if advised by a health worker

Important tip

  • Avoid drinking coffee or tea 1 hour before or after meals. Caffeine blocks iron absorption.

Iron-rich foods

Red meat, liver, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, peanuts, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, seeds, and dried fruits.
